- Get monthly blood tests (to assess liver function) during the first six months of treatment
- Receive your 30-day pill supply each month, so you don’t miss doses
- Stay with it over time as part of the treatment plan you chose with your healthcare provider
At this point in your AUBAGIO journey, you may have developed (or are working to develop) a good medication schedule that works for you. But sometimes, even with a reliable schedule, you may miss a dose or consider skipping a dose.
Are you feeling better, worse, or exactly the same?
There are many reasons why someone may not take their medication as prescribed. It can help to understand some reasons why taking medication as prescribed can be a complex behavior. Here are some tips to help with some common reasons why people don’t take medication, such as not being able to afford it, or not remembering to take it.
In this article, we are going to focus on some different reasons you might miss doses.
If you have a headache, you might reach for the over-the-counter pain medication and feel better in just a little while. But like all disease-modifying treatments (DMTs), AUBAGIO generally will NOT make you "feel better."1
A DMT isn’t prescribed for symptom management, or to help treat a recent relapse. It is considered, according to the National MS Society, "the best strategy currently available to slow the natural course of MS."1 (Learn how AUBAGIO was proven effective in treating relapsing MS in 3 important ways.)
It's important that you talk to you doctor about what to expect while taking a disease-modifying treatment. Generally, if you "feel better," it is likely NOT a reason to stop taking AUBAGIO as prescribed. In other words, if you and your doctor believe AUBAGIO is working for you, continue to take it as prescribed.
Medications have side effects, including AUBAGIO. Some side effects may be temporary. If you are experiencing side effects that concern you, talk to your doctor. He or she may have tips that can help or might be able to inform you about what you might expect.
Knowing what you might expect or what you may do to help with side effects may help you stay motivated during these challenges.
Feeling exactly the same?
Sometimes, people think they no longer need relapsing MS medication because they don’t "feel different." They may think the medication isn’t working.2 It can help to remind yourself of how a DMT is proven effective and what the possible benefits are for staying with it as prescribed. While the effects of DMT treatment may not be immediately apparent, it can help to understand how your doctor will assess your treatment plan over time. It can be motivating to hear from your doctor that your treatment plan is working!
Staying with it as prescribed
There are many reasons you may want to miss or skip doses of treatment. Feeling better, feeling worse, or feeling the same can be some reasons.
It's helpful to remind yourself of why you and your doctor chose AUBAGIO as part of your relapsing MS treatment plan, and how you and your doctor will assess your treatment plan over time.
Staying with it isn’t always easy, but if you can find personal reasons to commit to your treatment plan, it can be encouraging that you know you are doing what you can to treat your relapsing MS.
